The Faculty
Katherine Sye Grover
Director
I am the Director of Environment, Technology, and Economy (ETE) and a Lecturer in Environmental Science and Policy (ENSP). I have a background in biology, economics, and political science, and bring that interdisciplinary focus to my teaching. My courses are also informed by my decade of professional experience in the environmental field, including work in India, Mexico, and with the US EPA. I am particularly interested in learning about global environmental governance as it relates to climate change and developing countries. My interest in environmental issues began as I was growing up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. My time away from the university is spent with my husband and our two young children, and practicing Hindi and bhangra dancing.

Volha Roshchanka
CPSP 118E Instructor
I am a graduate student in Sustainable Development and Conservation Biology. Growing up in Belarus, I witnessed the urgency of environmental issues on the example of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosion. It greatly influenced me in my decision to choose a career in environmental/biological science and policy. Prior to starting graduate education, I worked for three years at the World Resources Institute promoting sustainable forest management in Russia and Eastern Europe. More recently, I have been learning about tropical ecosystems, while volunteering for a conservation organization, Friends of the Osa, based in Washington, DC, with field activities in Costa Rica. I spent this summer updating the organization’s website, developing an interpretive trail system, and learning about the tropical biodiversity on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica.

Dr. Bruce James, Director of Environmental Science and Policy, and Professor, Environmental Science and Technology
I am the Director of the Environmental Science & Policy (ENSP) program and a Professor in Environmental Science and Technology. I teach both graduate students and undergraduates regularly, and my courses include ENSP 101 (Introduction to Environmental Science); ENSP 400 (the Capstone in ENSP); ENST 421 (Soil Chemistry); and ENST 440 (Crops, Soils, and Civilization). My love of the environment grew out of my hobbies while in college and my work with the Appalachian Mountain Club in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, biking, camping and kayaking with my wife and three sons.
Dr. Wendy Whittemore, Director of EcoHouse, and Associate Director, Environmental Science and Policy
I'm the Associate Director of the Environmental Science & Policy (ENSP) program, and the Director of EcoHouse. I enjoy working closely with students in those programs and here in ETE. Over the years, I have held a number of positions in academic advising, including one in the Division of Letters & Sciences; my career passion is helping students find majors they like and do well in. My love of the outdoors grew out of youthful exploits in the fields and forests of central Massachusetts and on the waters off southern Maine. These days, I enjoy hiking -- and will climb almost anything if there is a view at the top!
